Jamie Lee Curtis has described Halloween Kills as a “masterpiece” that perfectly reflects the mob mentality she believes exists within modern-day society. With mob themes so prevalent throughout the movie actually had the working title of Mob Rules.
“What we were seeing around the country of the power, of the rage of voices, big groups of people coming together enraged at the set of circumstances, that’s what the movie is. The movie is about a mob,” Curtis explained during an interview with SiriusXM’s Jess Cagle.
“And so it’s very interesting because it takes on what happens when trauma infects an entire community,” Curtis continued. “And we’re seeing it everywhere with the Black Lives Matter movement. We’re seeing it in action and ‘Halloween Kills’ weirdly enough, dovetailed onto that, proceeded it, it was written before that occurred, but then of course, so when you see it, it’s a seething group of people moving through the story as a big angry group, it’s really, really, really intense. It’s a masterpiece.”
Halloween Kills was originally intended to come out on Oct. 16, just in time for this year’s Halloween celebrations. However, it was delayed by a year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its continuing impact upon cinema. The movie is a sequel to 2018’s Halloween, which saw Michael Myers once again return to haunt and stalk Curtis’ character, Laurie Strode — only to discover she had spent decades preparing for his return.
Curtis first appeared as Laurie Strode in the original 1978 Halloween, which was also her first credited acting role. In her first appearance, Laurie was not the terrifying force she eventually became in the Halloween of 2018. Halloween Kills is intended to be the first of two final installments in the ongoing fight between Laurie and Michael — only one can come out alive, but because of the mob-like themes promised by Curtis, Laurie will hopefully not be fighting this battle alone.
Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier, Halloween Kills stars Curtis, Andi Matichak and Judy Greer. The film arrives in theaters Oct. 15, 2021.
